Family Summer Holidays 2020
The long summer holidays are the most popular times for families to travel but that doesn’t mean that you need to follow the crowd. Join us on an exciting, action-packed family summer holiday and we’ll show you the must-see sights and the secret corners of a destination. Our experienced walk leaders have masses of knowledge and insight to share so you’re in safe hands as they specifically tailor walks and activities to your family and your interests.
With a dozen country houses all across the UK offering family holidays over summer, we have a huge range of choice when it comes to the type of walk, level of activity and other attractions.
Our Scottish Highland house, Alltshellach, in Glen Coe has an inspirational location loch-side with sweeping meadows out front and rugged mountains all around just ripe for exploring. Perhaps you'll bag a munro, climb Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, take a trip on a gondola through the Nevis Range, ride the Jacobite steam train or take the ferry to an Inner Hebridean island.
Wales is wonderful in summer and our two country houses give you contrasting opportunities. Base yourself at Nythfa House in Brecon for a chance to explore Waterfall Country, clamber behind a magnificent cascade and conquer Pen y Fan (if you can tear yourself away from the indoor pool) or head to Southern Snowdonia to enjoy the rugged mountains of this area without the crowds converging on the north. Dolserau Hall sits within the National Park and has spectacular views from every room, with large grounds and great walks right on the doorstep
In the Lake District you’re spoiled for choice with two of our most popular houses. Derwentwater in the Northern Lake District is an idyllically located base for a family summer holiday right on the shore of the lake, with gorgeous gardens, outdoor space and a thrilling range of walks and activities to tackle, while Conistonwater in the Southern Lake District has a similarly glorious setting above Coniston Water, eight acres of grounds to indulge your Swallows and Amazons adventure and some of Wainwright’s favourite summits for you and your family to conquer.
If it’s a combination of coast, castles and amazing wildlife you want on your family summer holiday, head to Alnmouth in historic Northumberland. Breathe in the sea air and enjoy walks along stunning beaches and well-marked coastal paths, walk barefoot across the sands to Lindisfarne, sail to the Farne Islands to spot dolphins and step over the border for the best ice cream in Scotland.
Whether it’s the Dales or Moors, Yorkshire offers families wonderful adventure and activities over the summer. Whitby in the North York Moors is close to the beach and historic harbour but has woods and moorlands to explore as well and you can even ride the steam train to Hogsmeade station like Harry Potter. Just a few miles from Malham’s famous cove in the Southern Yorkshire Dales meanwhile, Malhamdale lets you take on the challenge of one of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks, tramp the Dales Way and delve underground to find stalactites and stalagmites galore.
The rolling Shropshire Hills around Church Stretton may be gentler but offer just as exciting and rewarding a family holiday. Country walks, castles and climbing on the ramparts of iron age forts are all on the agenda, along with train rides, crafts and simply splashing about in the heated outdoor pool.
In the south, we’ve seaside adventures available for families. Selworthy in Exmoor offers access to a National Trust estate, cliff railways and walks along the beach as well as wildlife watching, while our country house in St Ives provides classic seaside breaks for families chasing a summer holiday in Cornwall, with easy access to wide beaches, wild shores, shipwrecks and excursions to Land’s End, the Minack open-air theatre and St Michael’s Mount.
Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight has a fantastic seaside location just above the beach, making it one of our most popular locations for a family summer holiday. Hop over to the island to have your choice of wonderful walks with an experienced leader, access to the coast, the opportunity to hunt for dinosaur footprints and the chance to collect the multi-coloured sands of Alum Bay.
So, this year, don’t just have a family summer holiday - go on a real family outdoor adventure!
