So it’s easy to see the appeal of our family-friendly guided walking holidays, not least for reconnecting, making lasting memories, maximising bonding time, and bridging the generation gap – outside of the usual festive get-togethers. All that’s needed is finding somewhere fabulous that meets expectations for children and grandparents alike (or any combination of kids and grown-ups such as great-aunts, great-uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins). 

When it comes to multi-generational getaways, our UK walking breaks are so much more enriching and exciting than a fly-and-flop beach break. And unlike other stays, there’s no fear of older family members feeling like they’re being dragged along as free babysitters. Little ones get the wow factor, discerning teens get a suitably pleasing Insta feed, and doting grandparents get yet another excuse to spoil their brood. Best of all, under 11s go free in all but two of our country houses and the 11-17’s get discounted rates if they are sharing with an adult. 

Not only do our family-friendly UK holidays introduce children to the joys of the great outdoors, but they also promise a brand new perspective for grandparents – many of whom relish the chance to treat family members to something really special. We’re big on choice for the young and old, so you’ll get to pick your walks (easier, medium, or harder) with experienced HF Holidays Leaders who know a place best and will adjust walk times to suit weather windows. We also have a selection of gentler and more straightforward routes that minimise gradients and rough ground – but without compromising on sights or scenery. Or you can do things independently at your own pace for more flexibility and freedom.

As ideal bases for walking, outdoor activities, and adventure-led outings with children in tow, you’ll be staying at one of our 16 characterful UK country houses which are cherished for their one-of-a-kind charm, sense of warmth, and relaxed vibe. Choose from cosy Victorian manors, elegant Georgian mansions, converted granaries and farmhouses, lakeside hideaways, and more - all with desirable addresses just a skip away from some of the UK’s best-loved national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and big-name attractions.

All our country houses assure well-appointed guest rooms, comfortable lounges, licensed bars, handy boot and drying rooms, and Discovery Points offering a wide range of easy-to-follow routes and maps for self-guided walks. Some have putting greens and croquet lawns; others tempt with gorgeous gardens and landscaped grounds that offer free rein to wander. Full-board comes as standard, including a cream tea on arrival. There’s also free Wi-Fi, onsite parking, books and board games to borrow during your stay, and a helpful team for whom nothing is too much trouble.
