Get Kitted with HF Holidays & Cotswold OutdoorsWe've teamed up with our partners, Cotswold Outdoor, to provide the best 'kit list' for your travels.

So, taking on the Yorkshire Dales or the rugged mountainsides of the Austrian Alps? Here are our tips for picking out the perfect kit to take with you, as well as a few of Cotswold Outdoors favourite recommendations.

1: Boots

You’ll probably never notice a great pair of walking boots, but you won’t be able to ignore a bad pair. Because everyone’s feet are different we always recommend taking advantage of Cotswold Outdoors free boot fitting service, just visit your local store and ask one of their experts.

Don’t forget to upgrade your socks, a pair of walking socks will help prevent rubbing, and keep your feet dry, both of which will help prevent blisters.

2: Some Lightweight Walking Trousers

A really good pair of trekking trousers will be tough, but lightweight. If you’re going to encounter a variety of temperatures, a pair of convertible trousers will let you swap between trousers and shorts easily. We recommend the Ineo Pro Pants for women and the Kiwi Pro Convertibles for men.

3: A Technical T-shirt

Cotton t-shirts are great, but a base layer t-shirt will help pull sweat away from your body and allow it to evaporate much quicker. In short, you’ll stay comfy and dry especially when you start on those uphill sections! The Tech Tee range from Icebreaker has never let us down.

4: Wrap Up With An Insulated Jacket

A lightweight insulated jacket is worth its weight in gold (more actually). They pack down small and take up very little space in your rucksack, plus they offer a great warmth to weight ratio. Perfect for keeping warm on cooler evenings when you’re relaxing after a hard day. We recommend the Rab Altus or a Microlight.

5: A Waterproof Just In Case

From Britain to the continent or even further afield, the weather is always unpredictable. We always pack a lightweight waterproof just in case. A good waterproof will still give you great freedom of movement and the breathable fabrics will help let sweat out without letting the rain in. The Paclite from Berghaus and the Rab Kinetic are more than up to the challenge.

6: Pick Up A Pair Of Poles

Walking poles are amazing at taking the stresses and strains off your knees. If you taking on a challenge across multiple days, or with a lot of ascents and decent, we’d recommend picking up a pair, such as the Black Diamond Trail Poles. Once you start using them, you’ll never look back.

7: The Little Extras

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. If you’re heading out for a long distance walk, we’d always recommend taking small first aid kit and some Compeed blister plasters, as well as the usual bug spray and sun cream.
