Share your love of walking and travel by joining the volunteer team at HF Holidays. You’ll bring your knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to holidays across the UK and Europe, helping guests make lasting memories.

HF Holidays Leaders share their knowledge and skills as they guide our guests on rewarding coast and countryside walks in the UK. Our HF Holidays Tour Managers help our overseas holidays run smoothly, welcoming and supporting guests, coordinating arrangements with local leaders and suppliers, and responding calmly when plans change.

Both roles are central to creating the friendly, sociable atmosphere that makes HF Holidays special. In return for your time and expertise, you’ll stay in beautiful locations, enjoy great food and meet like-minded people. Best of all, you’ll become part of a welcoming community of volunteers, members and guests.

With flexibility over how much time you volunteer each year, you’ll join nearly 600 HF Holidays Leaders and Tour Managers creating memorable holidays for more than 60,000 guests annually.

Our UK guided walking holidays are led by enthusiastic HF Holidays Leaders. As volunteers, they share their time out of a genuine passion for the outdoors and love helping people discover coast and countryside landscapes on foot.

Every leader undergoes a rigorous selection and training process, including first aid certification and walking leader qualifications tailored to the holidays they lead.

What skills & qualities do I need to become an HF Holidays Leader?

It takes a special kind of someone to become an HF Holidays Leader. Aside from being passionate about walking, you’ll need to be a great communicator who can work closely and constructively with other leaders as well as our country house teams. No previous experience is required, and you'll need to make a minimum commitment to lead for three weeks, within two years.

  • Reliable, punctual, and well organised
  • Cheery on the greyest and wettest of days 
  • Sensitive to the needs of others 
  • Confident to speak in front of small groups 
  • Welcoming, especially to new walkers
  • An excellent navigator with knowledge of map-reading
  • Able to use a compass 
  • Experienced in walking the types of landscapes they want to lead in 
  • Fit enough to lead five full-day walks in a week 
  • Confident to lead a walk without having covered the route previously

HF Holidays Tour Managers

HF Holidays’ Volunteer Tour Manager play a vital role in ensuring our guests enjoy a smooth, enjoyable and memorable holiday from start to finish. Acting as the link between guests, local leaders and suppliers, they provide practical support, share their enthusiasm for the destination and help create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone in the group.

What does an HF Tour Manager do?
No two holidays are exactly the same, but the focus of a volunteer HF Tour Manager is always on making sure guests feel supported, informed and well looked after throughout their journey.

From welcoming guests at the airport and helping them settle into their accommodation, to coordinating arrangements with hotels, local leaders and transport providers, Tour Managers ensure all aspects of the holiday run smoothly. They share information about destinations and itineraries, answer questions, solve problems and provide reassurance when unexpected situations arise.

Just as importantly, Tour Managers help create the friendly and sociable atmosphere that makes HF Holidays special. Whether chatting with guests over dinner, supporting solo travellers, attending evening activities or joining walks when time allows, they are at the heart of the holiday experience.

What is the selection process?

If you think you have what it takes to get involved, below is a typical example of the application and selection process for available roles, which can take several months (depending on course dates).

Stage 1

Read the HF Leader or HF Tour Manager role requirements and decide if it’s the right volunteer opportunity for you

Stage 2

Complete an online application form

Stage 3

A member of our Leader Recruitment Team will be in touch to discuss the role and your application

Stage 4

If successful, you’ll be invited to attend a three-night HF Leader residential assessment course or a one-night HF Tour Manager training course.

Stage 5

Once you’ve successfully completed the required assessment or training for your role, you’ll be eligible to be offered appointments.
