Walking holidays in Ecuador & Galápagos
Straddling the Equator (for which it’s named) on South America’s west coast, Ecuador’s landscape covers everything from steamy Amazon jungle and frosty Andean highlands to volcanos (there are seven in total).
Easily the most celebrated wildlife-watching destinations in the world, the Galápagos Islands steal the show for any walking holiday in Ecuador. This incredible archipelago is one of the few places on the planet where human impact is kept to a minimum. And given that it was this very island that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, the sights are as spectacular as you’d imagine. Expect to see the Galapagos giant tortoise, blue footed booby, great frigate bird, marine iguana, Galapagos penguin, and more.
Elsewhere you can explore the lava tunnels and white sand beaches of Santa Cruz or enjoy the challenge of a walk around the crater rim of the Sierra Negra Volcano on Isabela – one of the archipelago’s youngest and most volcanically active islands.
