Accommodation

HF Country House
A New HF Country House for 2027 Lee Wood is our 43-bedroom Georgian property in the historic spa town of Buxton, opening 29 January 2027 with a special celebratory launch week. Not only does our newest country house have excellent rail connections, with Buxton station only a short walk away, it also has easy access to a wonderful variety of Peak District walking routes. Surrounded by the Peak District National Park, our Buxton base offers a wealth of walks across the dramatic gritstone edges of the Dark Peak, through the gentle valleys of the White Peak, and routes that delve into the region’s industrial past, history, and heritage.  Other nearby highlights include the Derbyshire Dales and the Hope Valley, home to picturesque villages such as Hathersage, Eyam, and Castleton, which is famed for its show caves and is crowned by the dramatic ruins of the 11th-century Peveril Castle.  When you’re not out walking, unwind in the well-kept gardens, or enjoy plenty of space for socialising and activities in the roomy bar and lounge areas.   If you want to take it easy or fill a free day, Lee Wood’s excellent location puts you steps from Buxton’s many highlights. Visit Buxton Opera House to catch a show in an authentic Edwardian theatre, stop by the iconic, Grade I-listed Buxton Crescent building and browse its fascinating museum, or simply stroll through the landscaped parklands of the Pavilion Gardens, which first opened in 1871. Alternatively, take a 25-minute walk to Poole’s Cavern, a two-million-year-old natural limestone cave and Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Itinerary

Itinerary

Check-in at the hotel is available from 16:00. If you are a member you can arrive at the house from 14:00. Enjoy a complimentary cream tea at 16:30 and meet other guests.

Set off from the Lee Wood Hotel for a day amid the grandeur of Lyme Park (payable locally – National Trust (NT)members free upon showing their NT membership card), where 1,400 acres of moorland and deer park surround a magnificent Elizabethan house. There's plenty to enjoy at your own pace, whether that's the formal gardens, deer-spotting, or simply soaking up the view. Afterwards, we head back to Buxton in good time for your 5pm bridge session.

Today combines two Peak District favourites. We'll start in Tideswell, the charming limestone village known as the ‘Cathedral of the Peak’. From there it's on to Haddon Hall (tickets included), England's best-preserved medieval and Tudor house, where timbered galleries and terraced rose gardens tell five centuries of history. A perfect pairing of village charm and stately splendour, with plenty of time to be back for evening bridge.

Discover more about the Lee Wood Hotel and the local area for ideas on how to make the most of your free day.

Discover the story of Britain's most famous pottery dynasty at its historic Staffordshire home, with a factory tour (tickets included) that puts you eye to eye with the craftspeople still shaping and gilding Jasperware today. There will be time for browsing and/or shopping before we head back to Buxton. Please note, the journey time to Stoke-on-Trent is slightly longer than the others on this itinerary.

Today’s sightseeing trip pairs the inventive gardens of Biddulph Grange with historic Little Moreton Hall (both are payable locally – National Trust (NT)members free upon showing their NT membership card). Biddulph Grange takes you on a journey around the world in miniature — from an Egyptian court to a golden Chinese pagoda — while Little Moreton Hall's gloriously wonky, moated Tudor frame feels like something from a storybook. Two very different delights in one day, with time to spare before bridge at 5pm.

No trip to Derbyshire would be complete without a visit to Chatsworth (tickets included), ancestral seat of the Dukes of Devonshire and one of England's grandest stately homes. With centuries of art and history to explore, set within glorious Capability Brown parkland, we've given this magnificent house a full day of its own to enjoy.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before making your way home.

We want you to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. You’ll find a welcome pack in your room with guest registration forms, menus, order forms for dinners and picnic lunches, the Wi-Fi password, and the front door code. Our houses are locked at night, so we recommend noting the Duty Manager’s number on arrival in case of an emergency (or getting locked out).

Evening entertainment

While evening entertainment varies from house to house, HF Holidays Inter-House Quiz night held after dinner on Wednesdays is a weekly staple. Your HF Holidays leader may be around for tips on guided and self-guided waking routes as well as visit-worthy local attractions.

Helping you enjoy the Great Outdoors - A natural focus on walks

Walks talks and Discovery Points
Our founder, country pastor turned social innovator, Thomas Arthur Leonard, was passionate about encouraging people to explore the countryside. His legacy continues in HF's continued focus on walking.  Many guests choose to travel with us on guided or self-guided walking holidays, and as such, evenings at our houses are often busy with walk leaders hosting various briefings and talks.  On guided walking holiday arrival days, there are walking information briefings before dinner, and for the duration of any guided walking holiday there will be a Walks Talk before (or on occasion after dinner), to go through the following day's walk options.  Self-guided walking guests, and those on special interest holidays (where there is free time to explore independently), are of course welcome to also join in these Walks Talks - please talk to the team locally if you have any queries. Our Discovery Points are filled with handy maps and route notes, designed to ensure everyone, not just those booked on a guided walking holiday, can enjoy the beautiful countryside settings that our HF houses enjoy.

The walking day
Prior to setting off on guided walks, our HF Holidays Leaders run through a short safety briefing. There’s also an up-to-date weather forecast on display at the house to ensure walkers have appropriate clothing and footwear. If you choose to do your own walks or are on a self-guided walking holiday, we ask that you please complete an Independent Walker Card each day. These can be found near the Discovery Point in the house.

You are welcome to check in from 4pm at the earliest. HF Members can check in earlier, from 2pm. On arrival, you’ll enjoy a complimentary cream tea and get to meet your fellow guests, our HF Holidays Leaders, and the rest of the friendly team. Check out 10am.
