Holiday overview

Selva Guest Booklet 2018

Selva is a mecca for walkers and a must see destination for all. This dramatic landscape and its profusion of flowers will not fail to impress. We meander through this fabulous network of hiking paths walking among magnificent limestone mountains, sculpted by glaciers a paradox against the delightful alpine meadows. We visit traditional mountain huts and stylish mountain cafes along the way.  See our High Routes Holiday and our NEW exciting High Routes and Hutting Holiday also based at Selva.

The programme allowed us to really explore the area, passing some large and startling wooden sculptures, a tradition of the region.  We also walked a section of the railway constructed under Austrian orders during WW1 by Russian prisoners. On our free day we visited the Ice Man museum in the pretty town of Bolzano (Bozen).  The ‘Ice Man’ is one of a number of corpses discovered in Europe in recent years as glaciers have melted, and the very well thought-out displays give a fascinating insight into the life of the late Copper and early Bronze ages.(Mark, London)

Itinerary

It's hard to name a favourite, because I LOVED all of the walks. I would even be content to repeat any of the hikes several times. The trails were perfectly marked and maintained, the refugios were wonderful and the views were amazing. Rachel, California

Early/Late Season

We offer an early/late season itinerary on the dates below which comprises a combination of itineraries one and two, due to snow conditions and a reduced transport and lift service:

2, 9 June; 15 sept 2018.

Itinerary One

16, 30 June; 14, 28 July, 11, 25 August; 8 September 2018

Day 1: Arrival day

Depending on your arrival time you may have the opportunity to see a little of Selva before your evening meal. On the first evening our leaders will explain more about our walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests.

Day 2: The North Side of Val Gardena

Easier Walk: We visit three ‘saints’ on this undulating walk down the valley, the towns of St Cristina and St Ulrich (also known as Ortisei) and the oldest church in the valley, St Jakob. 8 miles (12km) with 700ft (210m) of ascent and 1,900ft (570m) of descent.

Harder Walk: This is a more energetic and higher exploration of the meadows on the north side of the Val Gardena which still gives opportunities to stride through meadows, visit a mountain hut and enjoy great views. 9 miles (14km) with 2,300ft (690m) of ascent and descent.

My favorite walk is one of the harder walks, beginning in Ortisei at the Rasciesa funicular and ending at our hotel in Selva. The Raciesa funicular lifted us to a high alpine meadow. From there we walked along a gentle trail, in open space with spectacular view of the mountains, sometimes through clumps of trees that gave us shade, and frequently alongside grazing cows who provided musical accompaniment. We took a break at a baita, a hut, with a spectacular view of the escarpment that we would hike up next. Then began the most strenuous part of the day, over a pass, the Forcella Pana. I watched my steps but from time to time I would stop, turn around, and gaze at the mountains beyond the valley we had just left, and take pictures of the colourful, angled lines of hikers below me. During lunch at a baita placed at the foot of a gnarled outcrop I wondered how long this route had been travelled: Roman Empire? Did Otzi, the bronze age man whose mummified remains were found not far from here, pass this way? The afternoon’s hiking was very pleasant, a long descent to Selva in flower meadows and woods, in a nature preserve for a good part of the way. (Vincent La Scala, New York)

Day 3: The Alpe de Siusi or Mont de Bulacia

Easier Walk: The Alpe de Siusi is a massive “high meadow” with extensive views and fantastic flowers, particularly in spring and summer. As we promenade around the Alpe, there are plenty of potential café stops. 6 miles (10km) with 1,100ft (330m) of ascent.

Harder Walk: This is a linear walk starting at Passo Pinei with steep uphill walking via the “Schnürtsteig” to the plateau summit of Puflatsch / Bulacia. The descent takes us to the Marinzen chairlift that transports us down into Castelrotto. 6.4 miles (10km) with 2,500ft (750m) of ascent.

Day 4: Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto: Beneath or Around Them

Easier Walk: At the top of the mighty Ciampinoi lift, we can survey virtually all of the Val Gardena and beyond. Walking through dramatic mountain scenery, including the “City of Stones”, we have the opportunity to take a lift to the lofty Toni Demetz Hut. A steady varying descent through meadows and villages brings us back to Selva. 8 miles (12km) with 400ft (120m) of ascent and 2,700ft (810m) of descent.

Harder Walk: A classic walk of the Dolomites, a circumnavigation of Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto. 10 miles (16km) with 2,300ft (690m) of ascent.

Day 5: Free day

Each week there is a free day where you may want to visit the 'Ice Man' museum in Bolzano, or relax in one of the valley villages.

Day 6: Corvara or the Vallunga

Easier Walk: Corvara is in the next valley and affords a complete change of scenery and even flowers. Our walk uses a gondola to get onto a broad ridge with fantastic views, and welcoming cafés, before gently descending back to Corvara. 7 miles (11km) with 800ft (240m) of ascent and 2,300ft (690m) of descent.

Harder Walk: This is a strenuous walk along the U-shaped Vallunga, and then up to the plateau above. The scenery and terrain is ever-changing, and the objective, the Puez mountain hut on the long distance Alta Via 2 route, is a welcome sight and a definite refreshment stop. Fortunately, the paths, although often steep, are well engineered. 11 miles (18km) with 3,200ft (960m) of ascent and descent.

Day 7: High above Selva

Easier Walk: The Dantercëpies gondola takes us to the start of a balcony path with changing but stunning views towards the huge Sella massif – and a visit to one of the lovelier mountain huts en route. 6 miles (9.5km) with 1,400ft (420m) of ascent and descent.

Harder Walk: First a balcony path with spectacular views across to the Sella Massif, then we walk into the Edelweiss valley, next the incredible Karst “moonscape” of the Puez plateau and finally a long descent down the unspoilt Val de Chedul back to the hotel. This is a stunning but tough walk. 11 miles (17km) with 2,500ft (760m) of ascent and 4,400ft (1,320m) of descent.

Day 8: Departure day

or free day for guests staying for 14 nights.

Itinerary Two

23 June; 7, 21 July; 18, August; 1 September 2018.

Day 1: Arrival day

Depending on your arrival time you may have the opportunity to see a little of Selva before  your evening meal. On the first evening our leaders will explain more about our walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests.

Day 2: Ciampinoi and the south side of Val Gardena

Easier Walk: From the top of the Ciampinoi lift, we descend, traverse and gently ascend in the foothills of the spectacular Sassolungo massif, eventually arriving at a viewpoint at Mont de Sëra. Taking a chairlift down to Monte Pana, we then return to Selva on a lower traversing path. 5 miles (9km) with 600ft (180m) of ascent and 1,500ft (450m) of descent.

Harder Walk: Our walk traverses below the spectacular cliffs of the Sassolungo and to a true “mountaineers” refuge nestled in stunning scenery. The descent is steady, but quite long, to Monte Pana from where we return to Selva on a lower balcony path. 10 miles (16km) with 1,300ft (390m) of ascent and 3,500ft (1,050m) of descent.

Day 3: The start of the valley or Monte Pic summit

Easier Walk: We begin in Castelrotto at the entrance to the Val Gardena and our walk heads along to the small wooded Brembach valley then towards the viewpoint at Tamines Hof. We then take a traversing path along to Tagusa and finally back to Castelrotto. 8miles (13km) with 1,400ft (420m) of ascent and descent.

Harder Walk: We can see Monte Pic from the hotel, an achievable and satisfying summit. This route starts from the Seceda lift middle station, traverses the mountain, then goes up its west ridge and down its north ridge before returning to the Col Raiser gondola for the descent. 7 miles (11km) with 2,900ft (870m) of ascent.

Day 4: Val Badia

Easier Walk: Today we visit Val Badia, which involves a scenic drive over the Passo Gardena. This walk starts from Badia itself and we begin by ascending two lifts to a mountain church and a traditional refugio. The walk winds its way down through pine forests, but still with views to the massive cliff walls above, to San Cassiano. The walk finishes by following a river path down into La Villa. 5 miles (8km), 200ft (60m) ascent, 2,100ft (630m) descent.

Harder Walk: The harder walkers start from La Villa to take the Gardenaccia lift up to the Eastern side of the Gardenaccia plateau and head to the summit of Ciampani. We may head down towards the popular Puez Hut before retracing our steps for a short section and weaving down a rocky limestone gully to reach the Gardenaccia hut before heading back to the lift to descend to La Villa. 8miles (13km) with 3,000ft (900m) of ascent and descent.

Day 5: Free day

Each week there is a free day where you may want to visit the 'Ice Man' museum in Bolzano, or relax in one of the valley villages. For other options see Local Area tab.

Day 6: Rasciesa and ridgeline views or the High mountains

Easier Walk: The funicular railway gives swift access to the distinctive Rasciesa meadows high above Ortisei. We follow a circuit taking in the Chapel of St Croce, an easy summit with views to the Austrian mountains and a high pass before either descending through woodland to the Seceda gondola. 9 miles (14km) with 1,200ft (360m) of ascent and 2,300ft (700m) of descent.

Harder Walk: Our walk takes us to a lonely but spectacular summit, Sas Ciampac, which is off the beaten track and has amazing views. This is quite a tough walk in all respects, but the rewards of exploring this naturally beautiful mountainous plateau make the effort worthwhile – as does the visit to the welcoming Puez mountain hut. 11 miles (17km) with 2,400ft (735m) of ascent and 4,700ft (1,420m) of descent.

Day 7: The Puez Odles Natural Park

Easier Walk: After an impressive ride on a duo of lifts we arrive high on the mountainside with views to match. Soon we enter the awesome Puez Odles Natural Park, frequented by marmots and with meadows covered in flowers. A traditional mountain hut awaits before we descend. 7 miles (11km) with 600ft (180m) of ascent and 3,400ft (1,035m) of descent.

Harder Walk: Using the same spectacular lifts as the easier walkers to access the beautiful Puez Odles Natural Park we continue the day by taking a steep rocky path to the Stevia plateau. A mountain hut teetering above the Vallunga greets us, followed by a spectacular descent and a walk back to the hotel. 9 miles (14km) with 2,400ft (725m) of ascent and 4,800ft (1460m) of descent.

Day 8: Departure day

or free day for guests staying for 14 nights.

Please note that all itineraries outlined are provisional and could be subject to change. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leaders will brief you every evening about the next day’s walks.

We operate two walking itineraries at Selva on alternate weeks. If you book a 14 night holiday, you can enjoy both itineraries and all the best walks.

Local area

The Dolomites are a unique rock formation in Europe, with wonderful shapes and unusual colours. Underfoot paths were mostly easy and well maintained.  Refreshments at a variety of high lodges and refuges were a feature of several of the walks, and permitted sampling local food and drink, quite different from other parts of Italy.  (Mark, London)

Selva

One of three resorts in the Val Gardena, there is evidence that humans were present in the Val Gardena area since the Stone Age, although it is believed that they did not settle there until much later due to the cold temperatures in winter.

Bolzano

Bolzano was first settled in ancient times, when it was marshland, by refugees fleeing from the invading Gauls. It was later invaded by the Romans, who built a village in the area. The area was under Austrian rule from the early 17th Century, and after being contested over by both Austria and Italy, it fell under Italian rule from the end of World War II, when it was agreed that the region of South Tyrol would become autonomous. Today, Bolzano is a popular medieval city, in which the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is, more commonly known as the Ice Man Museum. Bolzano is reachable by the public bus, which runs daily.

Bressanone

A much quieter town, Bressanone is also popular, and has good swimming and sauna facilities, along with attractive cafes and shops. The Cathedral is well worth a visit, it was rebuilt in the 16th Century in a Baroque style. There is also the Pharmacy Museum, which shows the development of the pharmaceutical profession. You can get to Bressanone on regular bus services.

Ortisei

Ortisei is the largest of the villages in the Gardena Valley and is easily reached by bus. Here you could learn more about the traditional local Ladin culture or the thriving local sculpture and art scene and perhaps enjoy lunch in one of the pavement cafés. Alternatively Ortisei is also the starting point for a number of lifts which will take you high into the mountains.

Did you know?

In the South Tyrol, three languages are spoken: German, Italian and Ladin (a romantic language).
