 Early/Late Season

We offer an early/late season itinerary on the dates below which comprises a combination of itineraries one and two, due to snow conditions and a reduced transport and lift service:

3, 10 June; 16 September 2017.

 Itinerary One

17 June; 1, 15, 29 July; 12, 26 August; 9 September 2017.

Day 1: Arrival day

Depending on your arrival time you may have the opportunity to see a little of Selva before your evening meal. On the first evening our leaders will explain more about our walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests.

Day 2: Ciampinoi and the South Side of Val Gardena

Easier Walk: From the top of the Ciampinoi lift, we descend, traverse and gently ascend in the foothills of the spectacular Sassolungo massif, eventually arriving at a viewpoint at Mont de Sëra. Taking a chairlift down to Monte Pana, we then return to Selva on a lower traversing path. 5 miles (9km) with 600ft (180m) of ascent and 1,500ft (470m) of descent.

Harder Walk: This walk traverses below the spectacular cliffs of the Sassolungo (after a gondola ride to get close!), and to a true “mountaineers” refuge nestled in stunning scenery. The descent is steady, but quite long, to Monte Pana from where we return to Selva on a lower balcony path. 10 miles (16km) with 1,300ft (400m) of ascent and 3,500ft (1,080m) of descent.

Day 3: On the Alpe de Siusi

Easier Walk: The Alpe de Siusi is a massive “high meadow” with extensive views and fantastic flowers, particularly in spring and summer. As we promenade around the Alpe, there are plenty of potential café stops. 6 miles (10km) with 1,100ft (350m) of ascent and 1,600ft (480m) of descent.

Harder Walk: A varied walk starting at Passo Pinei, mostly up, via the “Schnürlsteig” to the plateau summit of Puflatsch or Bulacia, along to the “Hexensessel” (witch’s seat) and down to the Schafstall Hut ending at Café Baumwirt. It’s a bus ride to and from the walk. 7 miles (12km) with 2,400ft (750m) of ascent and 3,100ft (960m) of descent.

Day 4: Corvara

Easier Walk: Corvara is in the next valley and affords a complete change of scenery and even flowers. This walk uses a gondola to get onto a broad ridge with fantastic views, and welcoming cafés, before gently descending back to Corvara. 7 miles (11km) with 800ft (240m) of ascent and 2,300ft (690m) of descent.

Harder Walk: A strenuous walk along the U-shaped Vallunga, and then up to the plateau above. The scenery and terrain is ever changing, and the objective, the Puez mountain hut on the long distance Alta Via 2 route, is a welcome sight and a definite refreshment stop. Fortunately, the paths, although often steep, are well engineered. 11 miles (18km) with 3,200ft (960m) of ascent.

Day 5: Free day

Each week there is a free day where you may want to visit the 'Ice Man' museum in Bolzano, or relax in one of the valley villages.

Day 6: High on or above the Cislesaple

Easier Walk: After an impressive ride on a duo of lifts we arrive high on the mountainside with views to match. Soon we enter the awesome Puez Odles Natural Park – unspoilt by man, frequented by marmots and with meadows covered in interesting flowers. Finally, a traditional mountain hut awaits before descending on another gondola. 5 miles (8km) with 440ft (140m) of ascent and 2,000ft (600m)of descent.

Harder Walk: A true mountain day stretching out on progressively steeper paths onto the Stevia plateau towering high above the hotel. A mountain hut teetering above the Vallunga greets us, followed by a spectacular descent down an apparent cliff to pick up a lift for much of the descent. 9 miles (15km) with 3,300ft (900m) of ascent and 3,350ft (1,020m) of descent.

Day 7: Passo Gardena and the Val de Chedul

Easier Walk: The modern Dantercëpies gondola takes us to the start of a balcony path with changing but stunning views towards the huge Sella massif – and a visit to one of the lovelier mountain huts en route. A contrasting descent, mostly through unspoilt meadows and woodland, brings us back to the hotel. 9 miles (14km) with 800ft (240m) of ascent and 3,030ft (925m) of descent.

Harder Walk: First a balcony path with spectacular views of the “Sella”, then into the Edelweiss valley, next the incredible Karst “moonscape” of the Puez plateau and finally a long descent down the unspoilt Val de Chedul back to the hotel. A stunning but tough walk. 11 miles (17km) with 2,500ft (760m) of ascent and 4,430ft (1,350m) of descent.

Day 8: Departure day

or free day for guests staying for 14 nights.

Itinerary Two

24 June; 8, 22 July; 5, 19 August; 2 September .

Day 1: Arrival day

Depending on your arrival time you may have the opportunity to see a little of Selva before  your evening meal. On the first evening our leaders will explain more about our walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests.

Day 2: The North Side of Val Gardena

Easier Walk: A brief coach journey to the Col Raiser lift enables us to explore the beautiful high meadows above Selva on the north side of the Val Gardena. Flower meadows, great views towards Sassolungo and several interesting mountain huts await us along the route which is generally on good, well graded paths. 6 miles (10km) with 850ft (260m) of ascent and 2,600ft (750m) of descent.

Harder Walk: A more energetic and higher exploration of the meadows on the north side of the Val Gardena which still gives opportunities to stride through meadows, visit a mountain hut and enjoy great views. 9 miles (14km) with 2,070ft (630m) of ascent.

Day 3: The City of Stones or Monte Pic Summit

Easier Walk: At the top of the mighty Ciampinoi lift, we can survey virtually all of the Val Gardena and beyond. Walking through dramatic mountain scenery, including the “City of Stones”, we have the opportunity to take a lift to the lofty Toni Demetz Hut. A steady varying descent through meadows and villages brings us back to Selva. 8 miles (12km) with 410ft (125m) of ascent and 2,700ft (810m) of descent.

Harder Walk: We can see Monte Pic from the hotel, an achievable and satisfying summit. This route starts from the Seceda lift middle station, traverses the mountain, then goes up its west ridge and down its north ridge before returning to the Col Raiser gondola for the descent. 7 miles (11km) with 2,900ft (880m) of ascent.

Day 4: Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto: around them and through them!

Easier Walk: A fairly long walk but the “easiest” way to follow the famous high-level Friedrich August Weg route with exceptional views to the south. The usual lunch stop at Rifugio Sasso Piatto is a good place to spot marmots and, towards the end, the chairlift used for the descent is a welcome sight. 8 miles (13km) with 1,330ft (405m) of ascent and 1,800ft (560m) of descent.

Harder Walk: This walk follows one of the most dramatic paths in this area right through the heart of the Sassolungo massif. From the Ciampinoi lift we traverse to the start of a steep and sometimes rough ascent, with near vertical cliffs towering above. We emerge at the Toni Demetz Hut, with stunning views then descend on a lift to Passo Sella and complete our walk back to Selva. 9 miles (15km) with 2,400ft (720m) of ascent and 3,000ft (910m) of descent.

 Day 5: Free day

Each week there is a free day where you may want to visit the 'Ice Man' museum in Bolzano, or relax in one of the valley villages. For other options see Local Area tab.

Day 6: Rasciesa or High Above Corvara

Easier Walk: The funicular railway gives swift access to the distinctive Rasciesa meadows high above Ortisei. We follow a circuit taking in the Chapel of St Croce, an easy summit with views to the Austrian mountains and a high “pass” before either descending through woodland to the Seceda gondola or returning to the funicular. 9 miles (14km) with 1,200ft (360m) of ascent and 2,300ft (700m) of descent.

Harder Walk: It’s a long bus journey to Passo Pordoi, but the sustained, exciting and sometimes narrow balcony path just below Sella massif has amazing views to the Marmolada. The balcony has a remote mountain hut at the end before descending to Corvara. A very satisfying walk. 7 miles (12km) with 1,200ft (580m) of ascent and 3,900ft (1,900m) of descent.

Day 7: Vallunga, Sas Ciampac and the Puez Hut

Easier Walk: This is a perennial favourite with guests as it visits the delightful Vallunga (a long glacial valley) which is part of the local Natural Park. It starts with the “Way of the Cross” and its interesting wood carvings, and ends with a tiny chapel adorned with antique frescoes. In between, the walk can be varied to extend or shorten it. 9 miles (14km) with 1,500ft (470m) of ascent.

Harder Walk: A lonely but spectacular summit, Sas Ciampac is off the beaten track and has amazing views. This is quite a tough walk in all respects, but the rewards of exploring this naturally beautiful mountainous plateau make the effort worthwhile – as does the visit to the welcoming Puez mountain hut. 11 miles (17km) with 2,300ft (710m) of ascent and 4,400ft (1,300m) of descent.

Day 8: Departure day

or free day for guests staying for 14 nights.

Please note that all itineraries outlined are provisional and could be subject to change. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leaders will brief you every evening about the next day’s walks.

We operate two walking itineraries at Selva on alternate weeks. If you book a 14 night holiday, you can enjoy both itineraries and all the best walks.

Local area

An introduction to the area

The Val Gardena or Grödental, as it is called in German, lies at the heart of the Ladin region in the South Tyrol. The Dolomitic scenery in this area is unique, with its sheer limestone cliffs towering above green valleys. The local culture is still strongly influenced by the Ladin traditions; about 80% of the population are of Ladin descent, and you may hear this old local language spoken. Today the Val Gardena is popular with tourists but peace still reigns in the high mountain pastures

Selva (Wolkenstein is the German name) is situated at an altitude of 1,560m at the head of the Val Gardena. Until the 1970s it was a very small village, but since then it has developed into an extensive winter and summer resort. However the modern buildings have been sympathetically designed with the majority in a traditional chalet appearance. Towering above are the mountains of Stevia, Pizes da Cier, Sella and Sassolungo and the magnificent Dantercëpies and Ciampinoi forests.

Local highlights

Local walks - there are a wealth of walks in the Gardena Valley and your leaders will be happy to recommend options if you would like to walk independently on your free day.

Ortisei  - Ortisei is the largest of the villages in the Gardena Valley and is easily reached by bus. Here you could wander around the historic centre and perhaps enjoy lunch in one of the pavement cafés. Alternatively Ortisei is also the starting point for a number of lifts which will take you high into the mountains, perhaps exploring an area not visited during your walks.

Bolzano - an interesting town that is the administrative centre of the South Tyrol region. There is a good bus service from Selva, with the journey taking approximately 1½ hours. Some of the town’s interesting historic buildings include the 14th century Franciscan church and the Chiesa dei Domenican monastery which has frescoes of 15th century life painted on the walls. Bolzano’s main attraction is the fascinating ‘Ice Man’ museum which contains the preserved body of a prehistoric man and his artefacts that were found high on an alpine glacier. There are frequently long queues to enter the museum, but our previous guests have highly recommended a visit.

Bressanone - another interesting historic town with arcaded streets. The Duomo in the main square dates from the 13th century and its 14th century cloisters are decorated  with medieval frescoes. The nearby Bishop's Palace now houses the Diocesan Museum.

Coach Tour - A Coach tour of the Dolomites is another popular option with our guests. The tour is organised by the local tourist office – you’ll need to book your place on the first few days of the holiday. The coach will take you through the dramatic scenery to the east of Selva, allowing you to view the Marmolada Massif at close quarters.

Entertainment - There is a programme of summer events in the village, and most weeks in high season there is a good selection of concerts, slide shows and folklore events.

Shops & facilities

Although Selva is quite modest in size, you will find a good selection of shops including two small supermarkets, a bakery, chemist and local craft shops. Mini-golf, pitch and putt, squash and tennis courts, nine-pin bowling, ice skating and cycle hire are all available in Selva.

Further Information - www.val-gardena.com

Transport

Regular buses (every half hour in high season) connect Selva with the other valley villages of Ortisei and St Cristina, with most continuing to either Bressanone or the city of Bolzano. In the other direction there are a handful of buses that head over the passes at the head of the valley towards Corvara.
