Take your hillwalking to new heights on this Munro-bagging Challenge Holiday in the mighty Mamores. This dramatic Highland mountain range is home to 18 towering peaks over 3,000ft, including 10 official Munros – all ripe for conquering. Linked by a long, rugged ridge, these summits offer a thrilling test for fit and experienced walkers. Most of the walking is on good paths. However, there are sections where we walk along narrow ridges or next to steep hillsides. There are a few occasions where we will have to use hands as well as feet. With our expert leader by your side, you’ll take on steep ascents, exhilarating ridgelines, and be rewarded with unforgettable views across some of Scotland’s most spectacular mountain scenery.

Distance: 8.5 miles (13.5km)

Ascent: 3,850ft (1,160m)

Stob Ban (White Peak) can look as if it is covered in snow in a certain light, but the whiteness is really caused by its quartzite summit. Mullach nan Coirean (Summit of the Corries) is more of a reddish colour and is the broad summit at the western end of the range.

Starting in Glen Nevis, we ascend through a beautiful valley on a good but stony path to the Mamores ridge. We ascend next to a cliff, to the summit of Stob Ban. There then follows a pleasant two mile ridge walk with great views on a clear day, to Mullach nan Coirean, taking in a Munro Top along the way before descending to a forest path that takes us back to our starting point.

Distance: 7.5 miles (12km)

Ascent: 4,400ft (1,340m)

Starting in Kinlochleven, we follow the West Highland Way for a short distance before heading north to the main ridge through a high corrie (Coire na h-Eirghe). We ascend Am Bodach (The Old Man) then retrace our steps and ascend Sgurr an Iubhair (Peak of the Yew Tree) which was a Munro until 1997 but is now a ‘Top’. At this point we turn north west and ascend Stob Choire a Mhail.

We cross the narrow and airy Devil’s Ridge, bypassing the difficult scrambling to reach the summit of Sgurr a’ Mhaim (Peak of the Breast). We then descend steeply into Glen Nevis. The first section of the descent path is on quartzite scree.

Discover more about Alltshellach and the local area for ideas on how to make the most of your free day.

Distance: 11.5 miles (18.5 km)

Ascent: 4,550ft (1,380m)

Starting in Kinlochleven, we walk through a beautiful deciduous wood and pass several waterfalls before ascending to the pipeline that takes water from Loch Eilde Mor to the Blackwater Reservoir. We follow this as it traverses across the hillside with views along Loch Leven and out to sea. We then walk alongside Loch Eilde Mor and ascend by a different route from day 6, to Coire an Lochain.

We follow a delightful zig-zag stalkers’ path up to Sgurr Eilde Beag and Binnein Mor South Top before following a narrow ridge out to Binnein Mor (Big Peak), the highest of the Mamores. From here we can gaze across at Ben Nevis and look down into the depths of Glen Nevis.

We retrace our steps a little before following another ridge that is narrow in places to the first of the twin summits of Na Gruagaichean (The Maidens), which is a Munro. We descend south to re-join the Old Military Road and a path back down into Kinlochleven.

Distance: 12 miles (19.5km)

Ascent: 5,000ft (1,520m)

This is a long day spent tackling the two outlier Munros. Starting in Kinlochleven, we take a look at the magnificent Grey Mare’s waterfall before following a good but eroded track up to the Old Military Road built in the 18th Century. We then have a stalkers’ path to follow, up to the splendid Coire an Lochain.

Another stalkers’ path takes us to the base of Binnein Beag (Small peak) with hopefully, views across to the Grey Corries. We ascend this stony conical peak over scree and schistose boulders before returning to Coire an Lochain and ascending Sgurr Eilde Mor (Big Peak of the Hind) on similar terrain, before re-tracing our steps back to Kinlochleven.

Distance: 8 miles (13 km)

Ascent: 3,500 feet (1,060m)

We are dropped off at the top car park in Glen Nevis. Then we have a beautiful gorge walk into the hanging valley at Steall where the third highest waterfall in Scotland cascades down above a wire bridge, which we balance across. We walk below the waterfall and ascend on a steep winding path to the summit of An Gearanach at which point we might understand its name (The Complainer)!

We continue along a narrow ridge to An Garbhanach (The Rough One), descending and re-ascending onto Stob Coire a’ Chairn (Peak of the Corrie of the Cairn) before following a delightful engineered path tramped by generations of deerstalkers into Coire na Ba and then descend into Kinlochleven for a well earned drink.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before making your way home.

Alltshellach

For a combination of mountain views, olde-worlde charm, and somewhere comfortable to sleep, this stately Scottish house in North Ballachulish has an enviable setting right on the shores of Loch Leven. The walking opportunities here are as every bit rugged and romantic as you’d expect, especially around Glen Coe, the Mamores, Kinlochleven, Bidean nam Bian, and Ben Nevis – the 1,345-metre-high peak towering above glistening lochans and glacial valleys in the north-west Highlands. You can also spend time in Fort William and ride the Hogwarts-esque Jacobite steam train as it makes its way through beauty spots such as Loch Eil, Glenfinnan, and Arisaig to the fishing port of Mallaig.

About your stay

A warm welcome
We want you to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. You’ll find a welcome pack in your room with guest registration forms, menus, order forms for dinners and picnic lunches, the Wi-Fi password, and the front door code. Our houses are locked at night, so we recommend noting the Duty Manager’s number on arrival in case of an emergency (or getting locked out).

Evening entertainment

While evening entertainment varies from house to house, HF Holidays Inter-House Quiz night held after dinner on Wednesdays is a weekly staple. Your HF Holidays leader may be around for tips on guided and self-guided waking routes as well as visit-worthy local attractions.

Walks talks
Our HF Holidays walk leaders host guided walking information briefings before dinner on guided walking holiday arrival days. This is followed by a group Walks Talk for information on the following day’s guided walks (held before dinner every evening). Self-guided walking guests are, of course, welcome.

The walking day
Prior to setting off on guided walks, your HF Holidays Leader will run you through a short safety briefing. There’s also an up-to-date weather forecast on display at the house to ensure you have appropriate clothing and footwear. If you choose to do your own walks or are on a self-guided walking holiday, we ask that you please complete an Independent Walker Card each day. These can be found near the Discovery Point in the house.

Food & drink

Seasonal dining, tailored for you

Our team of skilled chefs design our dinner menus to showcase the best of each season, from warming winter comfort food to vibrant summer dishes, including vegetarian, vegan  and high-protein options. We also source fruit and vegetables within a  40-mile radius of each house, open every break with a Chef’s Special menu inspired by dishes and flavours of the local area, and are able to adapt dishes to suit special dietary requirements.

Welcome Cream Tea

What better way to start your stay than with a cream tea, served fresh on arrival to make you feel instantly at home.  A quintessentially English tradition, our scones are baked in-house and served with preserves and clotted cream, providing the perfect opportunity to meet fellow walkers.

A hearty breakfast to start the day

Start the day with a freshly-prepared cooked breakfast  and a wide choice from our continental buffet, including  hot drinks, juices and fresh fruit. Our team offer a quick  and friendly service, leaving you fuelled and ready for your day’s adventures.

Our famous picnic lunch

Our personalised picnic lunches are perfect for a day out walking, ready to enjoy when hunger strikes. Choose from a large selection of fresh sandwiches and salads, freshly baked cakes and snacks, including the ever-popular Freddos chocolate bar! Everything is designed to fit neatly into your rucksack, and all of the packaging we provide is recyclable or compostable.

3-course evening meals

Our à la carte evening menus feature a wide choice of starters, mains, and desserts, made with seasonal ingredients and, wherever possible, herbs and vegetables from our own gardens. Shared around sociable tables, dinners are relaxed occasions, with drinks available to order at the table or from the bar, and a traditional Sunday roast to round off the week.
