Birdwatching Holidays

UK BIRDING TRIPS WITH EXPERT LEADERS

There's no better way to get to know Britain's birdlife than to spend a few days among it, in good company and good country. Our birdwatching holidays take you to some of the finest birding sites in the UK, from tidal estuaries and coastal dunes to chalk downland, alongside an expert ornithologist who knows the habitats and the birds that live in them. You stay at one of our country houses, with full board, comfortable rooms and sociable evenings, and the birding often starts right on the doorstep.

Guided birdwatching

On a guided birdwatching holiday you head out each day with an expert ornithologist who knows where to look and what you're looking at. In Northumberland that might mean the wildfowl and waders of Lindisfarne, the seabird colonies of the Farne Islands, and the broad sweep of Druridge Bay; in the South Downs, the reserves of Pulborough Brooks and the chalk downland around the house.

Your leader helps with identification and fieldcraft, from picking a diver out on the water to telling one wader from another, so a beginner finds their feet and a practised birder still adds to their list. Transport to the sites is included, and the days are sociable, with talks and time to compare sightings over dinner.

Self-guided birdwatching

Our self-guided birdwatching breaks give you the same country house base and the same birding country as our guided trips, with the freedom to explore it at your own pace. Northumberland is the setting, with Nether Grange in Alnmouth as your base and the coast and its reserves close at hand, from Lindisfarne and Druridge Bay to the dunes and estuaries between. Before you set out, our Discovery Point at the house has maps, routes and local knowledge to point you towards the best spots and what's being seen there, so you can plan a day around the tides or simply follow your own nose. You might be out at first light when the waders are feeding, or take a slower morning and head out after breakfast.

At the end of the day there's the country house to return to, with dinner and the company of other guests.

Where you'll stay - HF Country Houses

An HF country house makes a natural base for birdwatching, because it puts you in the habitat rather than a drive from it. Our houses sit in the heart of Britain's National Parks and National Landscapes, often with good birding from the grounds before breakfast, and within easy reach of the estuaries, reserves and coast where the days are spent.

Full board works around the birding rather than against it, with an early breakfast or a packed one for a dawn start, a packed lunch for the field, and a proper dinner when you're back.

There's space to dry off and stow wet boots and optics after a day in the weather, comfortable en-suite rooms, and a lounge and dining room where the evening tends to turn to the day's sightings and what everyone hopes to catch sight of the following day.
