The stunning landscapes of the Northern Lake District provide the perfect backdrop to this memorable sightseeing tour. History enthusiasts will appreciate a curator-led tour of Tullie House Museum, while lovers of literature can follow in the footsteps of William Wordsworth with a trip to his birthplace in Cockermouth. Enjoy a scenic steamer cruise on Ullswater, a voyage across Derwentwater aboard the Keswick Launch, and stop by the ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle – Cumbria’s answer to Stonehenge. We’ll also explore the historic estates of Dalemain and Mirehouse, plus admire breathtaking natural wonders including the dramatic Aira Force waterfall and the picturesque Buttermere Valley.

Accommodation

HF Country House
Adored by poets, painters, and literary giants for centuries, the Lake District has always had an irresistible pull. It’s no surprise, then, that this country house near the market town of Keswick holds such appeal, not least for its setting in lovely grounds that slope down to the shores of Derwentwater. The location couldn’t be more perfect; to the west is Cat Bells, to the east is Keswick, Walla Crag, and Latrigg, and to the south is the entrance to the Borrowdale valley. There’s a wealth of big-name attractions within easy travelling distance, including Blencathra, Helvellyn, and Ullswater. Also visit-worthy for walkers is Scafell Pike for its well-trodden routes and trails and the 73-mile-long Cumbria Way for its mist-shrouded peaks, glacial valleys, and many excuses for pit-stops and picnics.

Itinerary

All our carefully-curated itineraries are designed by our experts. While we make every effort to adhere to the described itinerary, we may take alternative routes or adapt the running order for weather and/or operational reasons.

Itinerary

Check-in at the hotel is available from 16:00. If you are a member you can arrive at the house from 14:00. Enjoy a complimentary cream tea at 16:30 and meet other guests.

After dinner this evening, your leader will introduce themselves and the itinerary.

Our first morning takes us over the famous Honister Pass to Honister Slate Mine for a tour of its historic tunnels. The mine lies below Fleetwith Pike, the iconic “fell” (mini mountain) that you see at the head of Buttermere. These mines have been worked for almost 400 years and are still in use today.

From Honister we head to the shores of Buttermere, where we’ve time to take in the scenery and explore the lake shore, before heading back over the pass and down to Derwentwater for a trip on the famous “Keswick Launch”, crossing the lake from Lodore to Hawes End. A short walk (1 mile, flat), from Hawes End takes us back to Derwent Bank, passing the beautiful gardens at Lingholm (once Beatrix Potter’s holiday home), where there’s time to stop for refreshment if we wish.

Today we'll travel through a series of picturesque northern Lakeland hamlets and villages to the town of Cockermouth where there’s the chance to visit the birthplace of the poet, William Wordsworth.

From Cockermouth we journey to the pretty fellside village of Caldbeck along the back road ‘Back o Skidda’, which offers fantastic views of Skiddaw itself. Arriving in Caldbeck, we’ll learn about Mary Robinson – otherwise known as the Maid of Buttermere – and about renowned huntsman John Peel.

Please note: Entrance to Wordsworth House is not included in the holiday price as many of our guests are already National Trust members and will receive free entrance upon showing their membership card – please remember to bring it. If you’re not a National Trust member, you can pay on the day.

Discover more about Derwent Bank and the local area for ideas on how to make the most of your free day.

This morning begins with a visit to Dalemain Mansion, home of the Marmalade Awards, where there will be plenty of time to explore the house and gardens. It’s then on to Aira Force, an impressive waterfall hidden amongst the leafy foliage of an arboretum, known as a prime spot for sightings of the red squirrels. From Aira Force we head to Glenridding, where we take a wonderful cruise along Ullswater on the ‘Steamer’. The perfect end to our tour of the far eastern fells.

Please note: The trails at Aira Force, though well-trodden, can be slippery underfoot after rain. Walking shoes/boots will be required.

A visit to Tullie House Museum and a walk around the streets of Carlisle passing highlights including the guildhall, cathedral, and castle, reveal the story of this historic border city.

We’re treated to a tour of Tullie House Museum guided by the curator who talks us through the different ages of Carlisle.

There will be free time to explore the city, too. If you’ve English Heritage membership, you might be interested in visiting medieval Carlisle castle. Alternatively, there are many shops and attractions to discover.

Our return journey back to Derwent Bank takes us along the Solway coast to the end of the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail. We'll see that here, history and wildlife sit side by side amongst the sand dunes, salt marsh and mosses.

Our final day takes in some of northern Lakeland’s most famous landmarks for stunning views across both Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake.  In the morning, we visit Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum where we’ll ride the rails on its 2ft narrow-gauge railway into the inner area to view the quarry faces.

Afterwards, there’ll be a stop at the much-photographed Castlerigg Stone Circle, before we spend our final afternoon relaxing in the scenic grounds of the historic Mirehouse estate which stretch down to the shores of Bassenthwaite.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before making your way home.
