Our self-guided holidays explained

Reading time: 3 - 5 minutes

With a focus on flexibility, freedom, and the joy of the journey, our self-guided holidays are perfect for those who like to do things at their own pace. You can stick to one of our carefully-curated routes - or tweak them slightly so you get to linger somewhere for longer. Either way, you’re in control and get to pick the walks that suit (easier, medium, or harder) in stunning locations where the countryside or coastline takes centre stage. Alternatively, you can keep walks to a minimum and simply focus on sightseeing, relaxing, and spending time outdoors.

When it comes to accommodation, you’ll be staying at one of our 16 characterful country houses, all of which are just a skip away from some of the UK’s best-loved national parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Best of all, there are no hidden extras. Where stated, our prices include all food and activities. Here’s how you can make the most of your time away, whatever you choose to do with your stay.

Independent sightseeing

When you’re out walking, you may want to linger a little bit longer than others at the places that pique your interest. On our self-guided holidays, you’ll get to spend as long or as little at each spot as you like, giving you a chance to check out that café, restaurant, shop, museum, or gallery that may have grabbed your attention. Alternatively, find a lovely spot where you can sit and watch the world go by.

Comfortable accommodation

As ideal bases for self-guided holidays, our UK country houses assure well-appointed guest rooms in up to three categories: Classic, Premium, and Superior. All have tea and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, hairdryers, TVs, and en-suite bathrooms with toiletries. Full-board comes as standard and includes a cream tea on arrival, breakfasts, packed lunches, and three-course evening meals (including vegetarian options). Most dietary requirements can be catered for at the time of booking.

Exploring at your own pace

Booking a self-guided holiday means you don’t have to factor in the needs of others or worry about keeping up with an organised group. You can travel alone, with a partner or group of friends, or whatever combination works for you. What’s more, you’ll not be pressed for time as the only timetable you need to adhere to is your own. It’s a good idea to pace yourself and accept that your holiday is more about relaxation than it is about seeing and doing everything at speed.

Relaxing and unwinding

Most of our country houses tempt with sublime gardens that offer free rein to wander. There’s also plenty of attractions nearby. For example, a stay at Nether Grange in Northumberland puts you just a stone’s throw from Alnmouth Beach, a wide bay that’s great for sandcastle building and wildlife watching. At Freshwater Bay House on the Isle of Wight, you’ll find a putting green, tennis courts, and lovely gardens with paths leading down to the beach in one direction and Tennyson Down in the other. For sunny days, there’s an outdoor heated pool (open from Easter to September) with a seating area and far-reaching sea views.

Convenience

Our self-guided holidays allow you the freedom to explore on your own terms. All our houses have a dedicated Discovery Point where you can take your pick from a wide range of walks that factor-in the best local highlights. With our easy-to-follow routes and maps, experienced HF Holidays Leaders have done the leg work for you. Safe in the knowledge you’ve got a carefully researched route to keep you on the right track, you can choose when to stop and where and devise a schedule that suits your needs.

Sociability

There’s a big focus on sociability at our country houses. We’re inclusive and everyone is welcome. You may fancy spending your days walking and exploring alone but welcome company and chat in the evenings. That’s why there’s communal dining for sparking conversation and evening quizzes and activities to get involved with. Even if you start off travelling solo, you’ll find that strangers are easily brought together by a shared love of the great outdoors.
