Creative Writing and Walking
Designed to help you become the writer you want to be, these breaks are perfect for both complete beginners and budding authors looking to build on their skills, style, and confidence. Based at selected country houses, you’ll enjoy a mix of group writing workshops and one-to-one sessions with a published author followed by guided afternoon walks in the beautiful countryside. Sitting just off the northwest tip of the mainland, this wonderful Welsh island wows visitors with ancient castles and incredible coastline. But the bird-watching opportunities are equally impressive. Almost every inch of Anglesey is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and thousands of rare bird species flock to its scenic shores every year. Summer walks along the coast are often accompanied by sightings of manx shearwater, gannet, grey plover, oystercatchers, and more. 

110 years ago, on 31 May 1913, in the little village of Matlock Bath on the outskirts of what’s now the Peak District National Park, the very first discussions took place about creating an organisation that aimed to improve the lives of those with a lower socioeconomic status by offering countryside walking holidays as an alternative to the trend of spending a week at the seaside.

Less than six months later, on 5 November 1913, our founder, Thomas Arthur Leonard, officially registered the Holiday Fellowship as a company, and HF Holidays was established.

We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate our birthday this November. So as a big thank you to everyone who helped us reach our 110-year anniversary, we’re planning a whole host of special events throughout autumn and winter 2023. Watch this space for exciting news coming soon.

As volunteers, they readily offer up their time, knowledge, and skills, purely out of a passion for the great outdoors. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our 726 volunteers for their continued support in the success of HF Holidays.

Annual statements for the period 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023 have now been emailed to all members with details of any interest rate changes depending on your level of membership.

Interest Rates for Members
You can earn up to 3% interest on your shares, depending on your level of investment (this additional reward only applies to Investment Plus Members with more than £10,000 of shares).

Thanks to your investment, Longmynd House in Shropshire has recently undergone a £1.2 million makeover. The works include rebuilding the rear conservatory, replacing all windows and doors with energy-efficient fittings, refreshing the bedrooms and corridors, and a new and improved terrace complete with outdoor seating.

While external renovations are ongoing, scaffolding is scheduled to be taken down before the end of June and internal works were completed earlier this year. The house has been welcoming guests again since mid-March and the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. We couldn’t be more excited about this new chapter in the house’s history.

As part of our wider plan to improve and invest in our properties, we've also fitted brand new welcome signs at all 16 of our country houses.

As part of both National Walking Month and Mental Health Awareness Week, HF Holidays raised a whopping £800 for Mind Over Mountains - a charity that offers professional mental health support to those in need by combining hill walking with the healing power of nature.

A group of 14 staff (plus Belle the Dalmatian) from the HF Holidays Penrith office, ran/walked all 20 miles of the Lake District's rugged Ullswater Way in support of this fantastic cause. After setting out at 8am, the last of the team crossed the finish line at around 7:15pm, completing the whole route in just over 11 hours.

A huge well done to everyone involved.

HF Holidays has helped an Isle of Wight hospice charity raise a staggering £340,000. Mountbatten aims to provide quality care for the terminally ill and those affected by bereavement by organising the annual Walk the Wight festival.

The event sees thousands of walkers take on short challenges or complete the full 26-mile coast-to-coast route with all proceeds going to the charity.

Given that part of the full route runs right through the grounds of our country house in Freshwater Bay, we once again opened our doors to provide refreshments, facilities, and support to the 7,800 people who took part.

We hope you had as much fun celebrating the coronation of King Charles III as we did. Here’s a peek at the fabulous festivities enjoyed at Newfield Hall, our Victorian manor in the Yorkshire Dales. Our guided trail holidays are long-distance walks that take place over the course of multiple days. Each trail is carefully planned by our knowledgeable and experienced teams. And to take the stress out of planning and navigation, you’ll have an HF Holidays Leader with you every step of the way. This September is your last chance to try these famous trails: Fife Coast Path, South Downs Way, Snowdonia Way.  

Thanks to a £10,000 donation from the HF Holidays Pathways Fund to the Fix the Fort appeal, repairs to the eroded ramparts of Shropshire’s Caer Caradoc hillfort have now been completed. In recognition of the generous donations from our guests and members to the Pathways Fund, our logo is now proudly displayed on the new steps and information board.

This month, representatives from HF Holidays joined a special walk to the ancient site where members of the AONB Trust revealed the plaque and thanked everyone involved. After the ceremony, it was back to our characterful country property, Longmynd House, to share a celebratory afternoon tea. 

Megan Winzer, HF Holidays PR & Partnerships Executive said: “We’re delighted to be involved with the Fix the Fort appeal. The restoration of Caer Caradoc will ensure that people can enjoy walks to the summit of this Shropshire icon for generations to come.”

Led by experienced chefs, our food and beverage teams have been working hard to come up with an exciting new range of dishes. Our spring menu launched in April and will be followed by the summer menu in July. Be on the lookout for some of our favourites including luxurious salmon and crab parcels, seabass with chorizo and an indulgent rhubarb frangipane tart.
